Carlos Basso: "Coyotes" ofrecen el Darién como "agencia de viajes", pero son traficantes de personas

As a columnist for a tourism magazine, I have come across some shocking news that I couldn’t help but write about. It has been reported that there are individuals who are posing as travel agents offering trips to Darien, but in reality, they are human traffickers. This kind of news is not only concerning but also raises awareness about the dark side of tourism.

Darien, Panama, is a beautiful destination that has been off-the-beaten-path for many travelers. With its pristine beaches, vast rainforest, and rich cultural heritage, it may seem like a perfect destination to explore. However, the recent reports of human trafficking have raised red flags for anyone planning a trip to this region.

These so-called “coyotes” or human traffickers take advantage of unsuspecting travelers by enticing them with an all-inclusive trip to Darien. However, once they arrive, they are forced into prostitution, labor exploitation, or worse. It is a horrifying reality that we all need to address.

As travelers, we have the responsibility to know where we are going and who we are dealing with. It is essential to do our research and book our trips with reputable travel agencies that follow ethical guidelines. We must be vigilant and not fall into the traps of these human traffickers disguised as travel agents.

Furthermore, if we suspect any suspicious activity, we must report it to the authorities immediately. It is crucial to raise awareness about the issue and educate ourselves and others about the dangers of human trafficking in the tourism industry.

In conclusion, while Darien may seem like a beautiful destination, we must remain vigilant and aware of the dangers surrounding it. It is our responsibility as travelers to ensure that we are not supporting human trafficking and exploitation. Let us all be responsible tourists and help make the tourism industry a safer and ethical one for everyone.
