Miguel Alonso Reyes es designado como Director General del Fondo Nacional de Fomento al Turismo (Fonatur)

On instructions from the President of the Republic, Enrique Peña Nieto, the Secretary of Tourism of the Federal Government, Enrique de la Madrid Cordero, today appointed Miguel Alonso Reyes as General Director of the National Fund for Tourism Promotion (Fonatur).

Miguel Alonso Reyes has a long career in public service and extensive experience in the tourism sector.

From 2001 to 2004 he was municipal president of the city of Zacatecas; from 2004 to 2007 Secretary of Tourism of the state of Zacatecas; from 2007 to 2010 deputy in the LIX local Legislature, and from 2010 to 2016 governor of the state.

As municipal president, Miguel Alonso promoted the rescue and beautification of the historic center of the city of Zacatecas -

Cultural Heritage of Humanity- managing to transform it to strengthen its vocation as a tourist and cultural attraction.

During his tenure as mayor of Zacatecas, Miguel Alonso Reyes was appointed president of the National Association of Mexican World Heritage Cities and vice coordinator of Tourism of the National Conference of Governors (Conago).

At the head of the Ministry of Tourism of Zacatecas, he launched innovative programs of tourism promotion of the state and development of tourist attractions to position the entity as a destination with a wide and varied offer, which allowed to position Zacatecas as one of the main destinations of cultural tourism, as well as congresses and conventions.

During his tenure as Secretary of Tourism of Zacatecas, Miguel Alonso strengthened the sector through training and financing of tourism service providers in the state, improving quality indexes, thus obtaining important national distinctions.

Miguel Alonso was honorary technical secretary of the "Colonial Treasures of Mexico" program.As governor of Zacatecas, Miguel Alonso made tourism one of the main priorities of his administration. Initiatives such as the construction of new cultural venues stand out; the rescue and beautification of historic centers in the municipalities of the state; investment in the conservation and promotion of museums, which placed Zacatecas as the second entity in the country with the highest number of museums per capita; obtaining the declaration of five peoples

Magical, and the consolidation of cultural festivals, among many other actions.

During his administration, more than 700 congresses, conventions, fairs and national and international exhibitions were held in the state, resulting in the arrival of more than one and a half million visitors.

In 2015 Zacatecas hosted the International Cultural Tourism Fair and, in 2016 – for the first time in the Americas – the World Folklore Festival.

Likewise, the lighting process of the historic center of Zacatecas, carried out during the administration of Miguel Alonso, was recognized as one of the most successful cases worldwide in terms of lighting installation of buildings and historical monuments.

During his government, Miguel Alonso achieved that Zacatecas will exceed 50 percent of average hotel occupancy, a figure never before reached in the state. According to figures from Datatur, from 2011 to 2015 hotel occupancy increased by 37 percent in the state; in 20 percent the economic spillover from tourism, and 42 percent the arrival of tourists to Zacatecas.

Likewise, the successful tourism policy during his administration was reflected in an unprecedented public and private investment with more than 800 million pesos in this area, achieving important results such as the diversification and modernization of the tourist offer, new products, new routes and circuits, increase in air and land connectivity, the positioning of the brand "Zacatecas sounds good", thus achieving the growth in tourist arrivals higher than that achieved in the last 20 years, as well as the increase in the number of hotels, restaurants, travel agencies and tourist attractions.In 2000, Miguel Alonso received from the German foundation Friedrich Naumann a recognition as "Outstanding Young Mexican Politician" and, in 2016, the Decoration of the "Grand Cross of the Order of Isabella the Catholic", granted by King Felipe VI of Spain through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which is granted to people who have contributed to strengthen ties of friendship and cooperation with Spain.

Upon taking office, Secretary De la Madrid instructed Miguel Alonso to work intensely to continue consolidating the destinies of Fonatur; Generate innovative mechanisms to stimulate financing to increase investments in the sector and, in this way, contribute to encourage national and foreign tourism in our country.
